The racecourse at Southwell has been around since 1850. In 1886, the racecourse had its first grandstand, although riding conditions were difficult.
However, in 1897 it was decided a new track was to be made and almost seventy years later a new enclosure stand was built and opened in 1965. The track became all weather in 1989, which is also the year Southwell held an all-weather National Hunt meeting for the first time.
Currently, Southwell hosts both All-Weather racing and jumps racing, with over 50 meetings a year the norm for the course, Southwell is one of the top five busiest courses in the country. Southwell Golf Club which lies adjacent to the Racecourse was founded in 1993 and has around 250 members.
